Judo Ryu Jacksonville was founded in December of 1996 by Sensei John Fiege, Nidan. Born in Holland, Sensei Fiege began taking judo at age 8 and at age 24 moved to the U.S. In Holland Sensei Fiege was the Dutch National Champion in 1986. This earned him his black belt (Shodan). In the U.S. Sensei Fiege has won the U.S. National Gold (1998) and Bronze (2005) as a Master. He won Silver and Bronze in the 2001 and 2005 World Masters and numerous Florida State medals.

It is this blending of hard and soft styles from which Cuong Nhu (pronounced Kung New) derives its name, which is Vietnamese for Hard (Cuong) - Soft (Nhu).
