It opened in August, 2002 with anchors Hudson Belk, Sears, Dillard's, and Hecht's. The state's first Saks Fifth Avenue opened in 2004. Hecht's became Macy's on September 9, 2006.

Burlington Square opened as Holly Hill Mall in 1969, in reference to the nearby neighborhood where it was located. At the time, the mall's anchor stores included JCPenney, Belk, Sears, and Woolworth, which eventually became Goody's. Four Seasons Town Centre is a three-story shopping mall in Greensboro, North Carolina. Currently anchored by Belk, Dillard's and JCPenney; it was the first enclosed shopping mall in Greensboro. Currently, it is the only indoor shopping mall within Greensboro's city limits; however, nearby Friendly Center, an outdoor shopping plaza, has many of the same tenants. It is also the only three-story shopping mall in North Carolina, though some department stores at two- or one-story malls have multiple stories. From the start, the mall pulled shoppers from all over central and eastern North Carolina. Many of them came to the 251,000-square-foot (23,300 m2) Hudson Belk, which is still the largest store in the complex and serves as a Belk flagship. The mall was remodeled in the mid 1980s and added many upscale specialty stores and a food court. It faced remarkably little competition in its market until the 1990s, when Cary Towne Center in nearby Cary doubled in size and spawned a companion mall, Crossroads Plaza. Source
